Epsom College is a co-independent boarding school with in-house catering for 1,080 students plus teaching and support staff. We cater over 2,000 meals a day alongside event catering. We offer breakfast, lunch and supper as well as mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. Everything is made in-house and we use local suppliers to source our products. We are a nut-free school. Our dining room consists of a hot food counter, pasta bar, sandwich bar, salad bar, jacket potato bar, cold dessert station, hot dessert station and an allergens counter for those students with special diets/allergens/intolerances.

We have an allergen matrix and ingredients list for every meal with make. On this list is also the name and brand of each ingredient we use. The kitchen team check against this list when prepping the item to ensure the correct item/brand is being used. If this is not the case, the senior chef team is informed of the changes and any new allergens or change of ingredients is re-listed, and changes to the menus are made and allergens highlighted on products before service. There is a member of the management team who looks after allergens, this person ensures all new information is communicated and listed correctly and then relayed to the relevant team members (dining room staff etc).

All members of staff are trained, and we also have in-person allergen training once a year with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health with an Environmental Health Practitioner Training Specialist to refresh staff on allergens.

The Allergen Accreditation audit took place on 10th February 2022, following submission of the relevant documents.

Led by Katy Miller, Catering Operations Manager, the auditor was given a comprehensive tour of the facilities in order to evidence systems and procedures.

Julian Edwards, from Allergen Accreditation commented “It was an outstanding exhibition of high-quality food safety and allergen management”.

In additional to being fully compliant with the loose food allergen regulations the College’s PPDS, or Natasha’s Law, compliance was equally to a high standard.
